The review paper "Abyssal food limitation, ecosystem structure and climate change" published by Craig Smith et al.  is now available online on the "Trends in Ecology and Evolution" homepage. This paper is a summary of the current knowledge about factors influencing structure and functioning of deep-sea ecosystems. It shows that assessments of environmental impacts of global warming and ocean fertilization cannot be done without considering the response of the abyssal ecosystem.
